Treatment for Eating Disorders 

Anorexia nervosa
 
  • Medical treatment to stabilize any serious medical complications which then hospitalization may be necessary. You may need to be hospitalized until you reach a healthy weight where your body functions are regulating properly.  Outpatient treatment is an option when you are not medically compromised
  • Nutritional treatment where a nutritionist/dietician will educate you about intuitive eating and proper nutrition for your body. You can develop and follow meal plans that include the caloric need you need  to reach or maintain a healthy weight. With nutritional treatment, you will learn how food is not your enemy, and it is your medicine to fuel a healthy and happy life. 
  • Counseling:  The goal is to identify the negative thoughts, behaviors, and feelings that fuel the eating disorder  voice and replace them with a nourished mindest and less distorted thinking. You will learn how to combat emotions, in a healthy way rather than restricting.
  • Other treatment: Cognitive behavioral therapy, Dialectial behavior therapy, group therapy 


Bulimia 

  • Breaking the binge-purge cycle : The first step is to stop this cycle and regain normal eating patterns. 
  • Recognizing unhealthy thoughts and behavioral patterns: This will help you understand how to not let weight define your self-worth and to target those negative emotions in a healthy way instead of it being a trigger to binge. 
  • Coping with emotional issues: While battling bulimia there are many co-existing issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and depressions, and therapy will help regulate those feelings and teach you positive mindfullness to combat these negative emotions instead of engagin in a binge episode. 
  • Other treatment: Cognitive behavioral therapy, Dialectial behavior therapy, group therapy





Binge Eating Disorder (B.E.D.)


  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): Focuses on the thoughts and behaviors involved when binge eating. CBT will help you understand how you use food to deal with emotions. CBT will help recognize what triggers your binge eating episodes  and how to face them
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy: Focuses on developing a healthier relationship with your friends and family which helps build a sense of a support system for you when you feel like you have the urge to engage in a binge episode.  
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Focuses on cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and teaches binge eaters how to accept who they are and handle their emotions in a healthy way.
